Youth of May is a story set in 1980, Gwanju uprising. It portraits the life and struggles placed by a young adult. This a love of a medical student who is a topper of his class and a nurse who is intelligent and smart. Hee Tae (Lee Do Hyun) is a medical student and a topper of his class. He is an easygoing person. Myung Hee (Go Min Si) worked as a nurse for the past 3 years. She is a kind person.
Main Characters:
Lee Do Hyun as Hwang Hee Tae
He is Hwang Gi Nam’s son and Song Hae Ryeong’s stepson. He has a trivial and sad past story. Hee Tae entered Seoul’s medical school with top scores. Although he is a topper, he postpones his graduation due to an unforgettable past. On the outside, he looks carefree and jovial person but deep down he is a man of determination and responsibility.
Go Min Si as as Kim Myeong Hee
She is a staff nurse for 3 years. Myeong Hee has faced lots of hardships even though she is young. She is always stands up and raises her voice against injustice. She is the one who supports her family. Myeong Hee works hard for a living and sends money for her brother.
Lee Sang Yi as Lee Soo Han
He is a Brother of Soo Ryeon and Lee Chang Geun’s son. Soo Chan is a businessman who returned after studying in France. He has a slight feeling for Myeong Hee as he considers they are in the same situation being the head of the family.
Keum Sae Rok as Lee Soo Ryeon
Soo Ryeon is Soo Chan’s Sister. She is a law student who fights for injustice against the odds. Though she comes from a wealthy family, she gets on the road and fights for justice. She is a long-time best friend of Myeong Hee.
Highlights of Youth of May Korean Drama
Unknown Reality:
Youth of May drama opens up with the modern-day at Gwanju, and skeletal remains were found on a construction site. The reality behind this and a broken old man who was on the verge of death. Now, we get drawn to the past which unfolds each mystery.
Past Life:
Hee Tae is an easy-going medical student. He is highly traumatized by an incident, in which his friend was severely injured. She wishes to go back to her hometown, Gwanju. So, he moves to Gwanju to arrange her transfer to the hospital. There she meets Myeong Hee in a hospital, where she works as a staff nurse. Then we get to know Soo Ryeon who is a rebellious girl who fights for justice, she is from a wealthy family. Her father arranges a date and she convinces her friend Myeong Hee to go instead of her. And to our surprise, the date was with Hee Tae, they had great chemistry even in their first meeting.
Truth Disclosed:
Hee Tae came to know about the switch between Myeong hee and Soo Hyeon. As the relation between Myeong hee and Hee Tae starts to bloom, Myeong hee disclosed that she is planning to move to Germany and gonna stay there permanently. This shattered Hee Tae. Myeong Hee always has been blamed for the works of Soo Ryeon she always accepts everything. When Soo Ryeon said that she wants to engage Hee Tae, she replied “YES”. Hee Tae got annoyed and he started avoiding Myeong Hee. On the day of their engagement, Myeong Hee opened her up and accepted she loves him.” I don’t want my May without you”
Struggle:
Hee Tae and Myeong Hee faced a lot of struggles and misery due to the people around them. In the midst of the struggles, they both found comfort when they are together. Ki Nam, father of Hee Tae’s home arrested him and says that he is an orphan. And he also warned Myeong hee that their relationship will only bring misery to Hee Tae, They both waited patiently for each other. Later they reunite in the hospital and decided to get married. Their dreams and life broke down when Myeong Hee lost her father. Again they both parted. Then in the middle of the war between soldiers, Myeong Hee was shot dead. There comes a drastic twist and the saddest end on the other hand soldiers arrested Hee Tae.
The End:
There comes an end to a beautiful love story. They both loved each other eternally and their love stays alive forever. To The glimpse of modern Gwajun, The skeletal remains were that of Myeong Hee and Hee Tae is the same silly and charming doctor, who helps and protects nurses from injustice. He is still alive only because of Myeong Hee and her memories are what keep him going.
Overall Thoughts On Youth of May Korean Drama
Youth of May is a heart-touching at the same time heartbreaking drama. As it has only 12 episodes, it entertains us in all the way possible without boring. We can binge-watch in a day. The sad ending broke me down and the end of a beautiful love story made me sob up. Lee Do Hyun and Go min Shi have played an amazing role. Their acting and chemistry were just awesome. I will definitely recommend this drama to everyone, just keep some tissues with you and witness this masterpiece. Do you guys hope for a happy ending, the same as I did? This story is full of twists.
