Lee Yeon (Lee Dong Wook) is involved in a case where he has to travel back in the time 1938. He meets Lee Rang (Kim Bum) his younger brother and Ryu Hong Joo (Kim So Yeon) who was once a guardian spirit of a mountain in the west. In the year 1938, she is the owner of Myoyeongak restaurant. Hong Joo is crazy for Lee Yeon and she wants to marry him. After completing the task Lee Yeon has to come back in the present time but is stuck in the year 1938.
Main Characters:
Lee Dong Wook as Lee Yeon
Lee Yeon was a former mountain God of Baekdudaegan and a nine-tailed fox. He is happily living with her love Ji Ah but he is involved in a case where he has to travel back in the time 1938.
Kim So Yeon as Ryu Hong Joo
Ryu Hong Joo was a former mountain god of the West, currently, she is the owner of Myoyeongak, a top restaurant in Gyeongseong. She encounters Lee Yeon who rejected her a long time ago.
Kim Bum as Lee Rang
Lee Rang is a half-blood gumiho and Lee Yeon’s younger half-brother. Although he shows that he hates his brother but deep inside, he is hiding his caring nature and long-time grudge against his brother. He is the leader of the bandit in 1938.
Ryu Kyung Soo as Cheon Moo Young
Moo Young was a former northern mountain god and he has the skills to save the dead. He is the childhood friend of Lee Yeon and Hong Joo. Moo Young is one who has stolen ‘Samdocheon Guardian Stone’ and then fled to the past for saving his dead brother.

Travel Back:
Lee Rang sacrifices his life to save his brother Lee Yeon and after the death of Lee Rang, Lee Yeon again receives the power of the nine-tailed fox again. He agreed on the condition that his brother be reincarnated. Everything was going smoothly but one day an uninvited guest came (A red-white mask guy) into their world and steals the guardian stone on the lunar eclipse day. To bring back the stone Taluipa told Lee Yeon to go back in the year 1938 and to return within a few hours. In the year 1938 Lee Yeon meet his dead brother and he was so happy to see him alive. Lee Yeon has successfully taken the stone but from nowhere, a Red-White mask guy came and stabbed Lee Rang.
Stuck in The Past:
Lee Yeon decides to save Lee Yeon and there he came to know that a thousand-year-old turtle Dong Bang Sak can save his brother’s life. However, in return, he wants a sword and that sword is with that era Lee Yeon. Although he is successful brings back the sword but he knows Dong Bang Sak’s intentions behind saving Lee Rang’s life, nevertheless, he saved Lee Yeon but he missed the chance to go back. Lee Yeon met that era Taluipa at the Afterlife Immigration Office and she informs him that Gate will open again on the next lunar eclipse until then he has to stay there. She also adds a condition for opening the door. Meanwhile, he decides to stay at Hong Joo’s Myoyeongak.
Red-White Mask:
Lee Yeon wants to see the face behind Red-White Mask, so asked Hong Joo to find out. When Hong Joo find out he was in shock and was unhappy to see that face behind the Red-White mask. Moo Young is the one, he was their childhood friend but he hates Lee Yeon for killing his brother. Hong Joo decides not to tell Lee Yeon about Moo Young because for her they both are very dear to her. Moo Young was ready to challenge Lee Yeon and he was trying his best to send uninvited guests into Lee Yeon’s life. He was searching “golden ruler” that can revive the dead and through that, he wants to revive his brother.
Shinigami Mercenaries’ Group:
Gyeongseong’s indigenous gods have vanished and some of them died overnight At Myoyeongak. Lee Yeon knows the person who is behind killing them and he has the treasures that everyone wants. So he told Hong Joo that he will go to Bando Hotel with treasures and not keep secret and in no time, Ryuhei Kato and Moo Young also decide to go to Bando Hotel. Ryuhei Kato sends the Shinigami Mercenaries’ Group, a group of 5 demons but no one knows that they are 5 instead of 4.
Trio:
In this fight, Lee Yeon, Hong Joo, and Moo Young are together they were fighting together with 4 demons; Ushiuchibo is known as a poisonous demon, and within a second Hong Joo and Moo Yeong vomit blood. Lee Yeon is searching for an antidote in the unknown forest where he encountered Yuki who is a ice lady. Lee Yeon is handsome and charming and that is Yuki’s weakness, Yuki decides to give an antidote but in return Lee Yeon gave a “golden ruler”. Nyudo is an old man and his specialty is that he can switch souls, Oogama is the strongest demon among them. Satori is their leader and his specialty is that he can hypnotize anyone.
Overall Thoughts on Tale of The Nine-Tailed 1938 Korean Drama
Tale of The Nine-Tailed 1938 is one of the best dramas of 2023, our Gumiho duo is back. Season 1 was a hit so the viewer has so many expectations from season 2, and I must say season 2 is better than season 1. From the beginning, I liked Hong Joo’s character she is bold, strong, pretty, and above all she protects her loved ones. The trio was amazing even though Moo Young hate Lee Yeon but still, when Lee Yeon need Moo Young’s help he is always there for his friends. Season 2 is the full package of action and comedy from the beginning of the drama you will not get bored till the end. Highly recommend this drama, you can watch it on myasiantv.
